The No. 5 Essex Hornets hosted the 12 seeded St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers for a division I playdown on Wednesday.
The Hornets led 2-0 heading into the second inning. A quick hit by Logan Wendell bounced and allowed Tyler Wells to jet home to score, 2-1 Essex.
In the bottom of the third for Essex, Cory Giannelli launched the ball deep into right field for a solo homer to increase the lead 3-1.
In the fourth inning, the Hilltoppers increase the lead as Hunter Palmeri knocked a base hit up the middle and a runner scored at home. 3-2 Essex.
In the top of the fifth inning, Jake Cady up to bat racked in a two-run dinger to lift St. Johnsbury to a 4-3 lead.
The No. 12 seeded Hilltoppers advance to the quarterfinals.
Over in St. Albans, Middlebury softball is facing the BFA Comets. The Comets open up with an 8-0 lead in the third inning, Avery Daudelin smacked a grounder up the middle. In the fifth inning the contest is done as BFA surpassed Middlebury 17-0 via run rule.
