For the first time in the history of the University, women’s lacrosse is coming to SUNY Plattsburgh.  The Cardinals will not compete in the sport until 2019, But they have taken the next step: Bringing a head coach to campus.

That coach is Julia Decker. A Penn Yan, New York native, she’s been in Plattsburgh since Sunday, August 13.  The  three years prior, she spent coaching at Fort Lewis College in Colorado.  Now, she’s finally back in her home state, the same state she played college lacrosse in.

Decker got her experience as a player at Brockport, so she knows exactly what she’s signing up for.  It will be a challenge, but a chance to be at the top of the Plattsburgh record books, is an opportunity she’s been dreaming of.

Decker says, “If I were a recruit at this time I would be totally interested in that.  You know, you’re making history, you’re setting records for the program.  The SUNYAC conference is just so dominant in women’s lacrosse, so that’s been really exciting.  We have goals of playing in the conference championship within five years, and really just kind of taking over.”

It’s a quick honeymoon for Decker, she says she’s already calling up potential recruits, adding that she’ll be targeting talent from New York and Vermont in particular.
