To say the CVU and South Burlington girls’ tennis teams are familiar with each other would be an understatement.
The Redhawks and Wolves faced off in a seventh-straight Div. I team state championship Thursday afternoon at Davis Park.
CVU added to its tennis dynasty with a fifth-consecutive team state championship, winning the match 5-2 over South Burlington.
Champlain Valley’s Sophie Dauerman was the individual girls’ state champ this season, and she backed up that title with a first singles win in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) over Kailey Yang in the team championship.
Dauerman’s teammates Corina Gorman and Ella Kenney also won their singles matches. Gorman came out on top 6-2, 6-3, and Kenney followed suit with back-to-back 6-3 set wins.
South Burlington’s Izzy Partilo snagged a point in the match, beating Kate Gruendling 6-1 and 6-4.
In fifth singles, CVU’s Julia Grant defeated Nisha Shah, 6-2, 7-6.
As for doubles, Redhawk partners Courtney Vincent and Lindsay Beer made quick work of South Burlington with wins in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Wolves stole the second doubles match as Emma Shedleur and Eve Heroux outlasted CVU in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 11-9.
Overall, the 5-2 championship win is the seventh title for CVU in the last eight seasons.
