Both Vermont hockey squads fell short in overtime against the Black Bears in the start of a weekend series at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The men’s teams closed out the night, and all the regulation scoring game in the first frame of the contest.
Senior forward Brendan Robbins netted a goal for the Black Bears before the five-minute mark to put his team up 1-0 early.
Catamounts senior Conor O’Neil received a slick backhand pass from Vlad Dzhioshvili to even the game up, but the Cats could not net another.
Maine took the game less than two minutes into the overtime period when Ryan Smith banged home a point-blank try to seal it up.
Vermont falls to 4-7-0 and will try to even up the series in Saturday’s contest against the Black Bears.
The UVM women’s team took the earlier contest on the slate against Maine, and also fell 2-1, but this one was finished in regulation.
Much like the later game, this contest was knotted up at one a piece after the first.
Junior defenseman Ebba Strandberg broke the tie with a second period tally for the Black Bears, and that lead stood until the end of the tilt.
The 3-9-4 Cats also look to grab a win in the weekend series on Saturday against Maine.
