The Middlebury Panthers hosted long-time NESCAC rival Williams for its season opener on Saturday.

Middlebury opened up a 3-0 lead in the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal from Carter Massengill. The Panthers increased the lead to 10-0 when quarterback Will Jernigan found Wyllis McKissick who dove for the score.

The score remained 10-0 until Williams quarterback Bobby Maimaron threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Frank Stola in the endzone. The Ephs trailed 10-6.

In the third quarter Maimaron faked the handoff and found Stola in the end zone for another score. Williams took the 13-10 lead over Middlebury.

In the final thirty seconds of the game the Panthers didn’t give up. Will Jernigan threw a deep pass to Maxwell Rye to put Midd in amazing field position at the second yard line.

Jernigan drove in the ball himself for the final touchdown of the game with only twenty-nine seconds on the clock. The extra point was also good.

The Panthers came back in the final minute of the game to take the win 17-13 over the Ephs.

Middlebury has now won seven of the last eight meetings between the Panthers and Ephs.
