Nighthawks win Governor’s Cup over Mountaineers

Upper Valley powers past Vermont to take 4-1 lead in season series

The Upper Valley Nighthawks secured the 2019 Governor’s Cup with a 6-2 win over the Mountaineers at Montpelier Recreation Field Wednesday night.

The game started about an hour late thanks to heavy rain, but once the game began, Vermont didn’t waste any time on offense.

In the bottom of the first inning, Cam Climo popped a fly ball into shallow center field that served as a sacrifice fly and allowed Austin Gauthier to tag and score for a 1-0 Mountaineers lead.

After that, it was all Upper Valley. Brian Moore sparked the scoring with a second inning solo home run to tie the game 1-1. Then in the third inning, Gehrig Anglin tagged a long ball deep into right field to send David Marcano around from second base to score and take a 2-1 lead.

The Nighthawks piled on from there and went on to win the game 6-2 and win the Governor’s Cup as they took a 4-1 lead in the head-to-head series with Vermont.
