The Norwich Cadets put on a show in their home opener against St. Lawrence at Sabine Field Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets had to fight their way to the 30-24 win over the Saints.
NU had a rough first few minutes including an interception and sack. Those miscues put the Saints in position for the first score of the game, and they stormed ahead as quarterback Tyler Grochot tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Viscardo. The Saints led 7-0 after the extra point.
After that, Norwich scored 23 unanswered points. It started with a field goal from Clyde Tamburro, and with nine seconds left in the first quarter, the Cadets struck again as Connor Bourque scurried into the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run. With that score, Norwich led 10-7.
In the second quarter, the Cadets forced a three-and-out from St. Lawrence. The Saints punted and Norwich receiver Manni Romero turned on the jets to return the punt for a 70-yard score.
Romero chalked up another touchdown on the next Norwich possession with a 30-yard reception from quarterback Matt Dunn.
From there, the Cadets held off the Saints’ steady scoring and continued to find the end zone in the 30-24 win for Norwich.
The Cadets improve to 2-0 and will face Coast Guard Saturday, September 21 at home for the Homecoming/Little Army-Navy game with kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m.
