The Vermont men’s basketball team will be hosting UMBC for the America East Championship. For the third season in a row the game will run through Burlington. UVM earned that with a huge 84-51 win over Binghamton in the semifinals.
Vermont sunk 14 three-pointers as a team and Stef Smith claimed eight of those triples. Smith set an America East semifinal record. The Catamounts shut down the conference rookie of the year, Binghamton’s Sam Sessoms. Sessoms scored zero points in 27 minutes.
“All this is well and good but we’ve got 40 more minutes to go so, we’re going to feel proud about this effort because it really was a good effort against a hot Binghamton team. We’ve got to enjoy this tonight and get right back to work because we’re going to play a good game on Saturday” said John Becker.
“You know, nothing else really matters at this point. All the accolades, all the accomplishments we’ve got throughout the season, it just adds up to this one game. I know the guys will be locked in mentally and physically and the coaches will do a great job putting a scout together and we just have to execute the game plan” said Stef Smith.
The Catamounts and UMBC will face off for a title game rematch this Saturday at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and we will have all the action.
