The No.2 St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers defeated the No.1 Champlain Valley Union Redhawks 42-35.
Sunday’s championship game was also a rematch to last year’s state championship, in which St. Johnsbury took down CVU.
Champlain Valley headed into the championship undefeated this season.
Senior guard Neva Bostic changed the entire game in a matter of two minutes. Heading into the second half tied at 17, Bostic fired not one or two, but a trio of three pointers within two minutes to catapult the Hilltoppers momentum. “Coming into third quarter it was tied. New game, zero to zero. So, we were like let’s go out let’s play some defense. Let’s win this. Let’s go” said Bostic.
Gatorade player of the year Sadie Stetson fired off 12 points, three assists, and two blocks. Josie Choiniere secured 13 points to lead the Hilltoppers to back-to-back state titles.
“We were kind of the underdog this year I guess coming in, they were undefeated.. we came in confident and we knew we could beat them. It’s just a great feeling. Especially getting to experience it twice and it’s my last high school game ever so, it was pretty awesome” said Sadie Stetson.
St. Johnsbury wins it’s second straight D1 state championship, third D1 title overall, and seventh title. (St. Johnsbury previously won four D2 titles)
